Understanding and explaining system failures are paramount in multiple disciplines such as engineering and the life sciences. Social considerations are often overlooked when analyzing failures, but should play a crucial role in the design, implementation, and in mitigating possible failure of systems.

Join us for a virtual forum on “Failures in Social Systems”—a first step toward shaping an integrated understanding of systems failures that is informed by the convergence of biological, behavioral, sociological, and engineering insights on March 7, 2024 from 10:30am-4:30pm ET.

An equitable future of work provides employees with work-life harmony and supports their overall well-being, health, safety, and performance. In this webinar, we focus on the ability to work from home while still feeling part of the team. This includes leveraging technology to make real human connections from home, as well as balancing micro-transitions such that workers can better move between personal and professional spaces. In addition, managers have a role in supporting these new ways of working in hybrid work arrangements. This webinar will highlight findings and applications from the fields of psychology, behavioral science, human factors, and ergonomics to identify insights and research gaps.

A Report Briefing on Advancing Understanding of Offshore Oil and Gas Systemic Risk in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico

On April 4, 2023, the Committee on Progress and Opportunities Toward Decreasing the Risk of Offshore Energy Operations releases their report, Advancing Understanding of Offshore Oil and Gas Systemic Risk in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico: Current State and Safety Reforms Since the Macondo Well–Deepwater Horizon Blowout. The report assesses the extent to which recommended reforms following the Macondo incident have been adopted, changes in the offshore industry systemic risk profile over time, critical gaps in systemic risk management, the extent to which the U.S. regulatory structure motivates or incentivizes reductions in systemic risk, and the role that the Gulf Research Program (GRP) has played and can play in understanding and reducing systemic risks.

This report release webinar is scheduled for Wednesday, April 12, 2023, from 2-3 p.m. ET and will feature members of the committee giving an overview of the report, including discussing its key conclusions.
