The open session will feature two panels reflecting on BOHSI’s legacy and future direction:

Past Chairs’ Reflections (11:00–12:15 ET)
Former BOHSI Chairs William Marras and Pascale Carayon will join current Chair Fred Oswald to discuss how human-systems integration has evolved across decades of science, engineering, and policy.

Past and Present: Hallmark Studies and the Changing Landscape (1:00–2:30 ET)
Panelists will highlight BOHSI’s landmark work and reflect on the board’s ongoing relevance in addressing today’s complex challenges.

The session will close with Tara Behrend on BOHSI’s Future, exploring how the board’s mission is adapting to new frontiers in AI, automation, and the future of work. (2:30-2:55pm ET)

This session builds on the first webinar in the Board on Human-Systems Integration's (BOHSI’s) Human-AI Teaming Webinar Series, Future Trajectories of Human-AI Collaboration and Teaming. This session will explore bidirectional performance optimization—how both humans and AI contribute to and enhance team outcomes. As AI systems become more adaptive and proactive across domains such as transportation, healthcare, and defense, the traditional view of autonomy as a binary is giving way to more dynamic configurations.

Rather than a simple trade-off between human control and AI independence, users must now adjust multiple interdependent factors, including degrees of AI autonomy, proactivity, and initiative. This webinar will examine how these configurations impact workload distribution, trust calibration, decision-support mechanisms, and intra- and inter-team interactions.

Key questions include:

What does performance look like in human-AI teaming, and how it is measured?
How do organizations define and fine-tune these parameters to align AI performance with human expectations and operational goals?
As autonomy becomes more fluid, what does meaningful human oversight look like?
How do we balance human supervisory roles with increasingly autonomous AI systems?

The growth of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies/systems has significant implications for state and local decision-makers, who need to consider their roles as regulators and users of this technology. For state and local decision-makers, embracing this innovation comes with the responsibility of balancing the risks and benefits of implementing AI technologies. The Societal Experts Action Network (SEAN) continues its AI peer-to-peer series to support decision makers in this rapidly changing AI environment.

SEAN’s peer-to-peer conversation series allows state and local leaders to come together to discuss these timely issues and learn from each other’s experiences. Previous topics include the social and economic considerations of AI, building and managing capacity for AI technologies, risk considerations for AI implementation, and how state and local governments can develop long-term strategies for AI that aligns with their goals and priorities.

This event will feature experts and state and local leaders who will speak to practical use-case for implementing AI technologies, such as for health, transportation, and other state and local services. Speaker presentations will be followed by a facilitated dialogue among all attendees. Registration will be limited to enable a small group discussion.

As AI systems become more integrated into our daily lives, the nature of human-AI collaboration is evolving rapidly. While current interactions often involve humans directing AI, future Human-AI Teaming (HAT) will require more dynamic, bidirectional partnerships. This webinar series will explore key aspects of HAT, addressing questions related to education, performance optimization, ethics, and trust, while also incorporating foundational theories, methodologies, and system design considerations.

The first webinar will provide an overview of the current state of HAT, examining what it means to work alongside AI teammates and how to prepare individuals for these roles. Where are we now? Where are we headed? This session will lay the groundwork by reviewing key theories and identifying emerging opportunities and challenges in the field. As AI systems transition from passive tools to active collaborators, AI can play various roles—mentor, coach, assistant, or peer—so this session will also examine the cognitive and behavioral implications of these interactions. Key questions to be addressed include:

What level of autonomy is appropriate?
What responsibilities should be allocated to AI versus humans?
How can we design AI teammates that enhance human decision-making and performance?

Understanding these foundational questions is essential to designing effective, ethical, and trustworthy human-AI teams. Join us as we explore the evolving landscape of human-AI teaming and the future of collaboration.

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine's Environmental Health Matters Initiative organized a webinar series to explore human exposure to and related health effects of microplastics in the environment.

The third webinar in the series aimed to inform the public and the scientific research community about the potential hazards associated with microplastics, drawing on documented studies and scientific evidence. It explored the harmful characteristics that researchers and stakeholders may consider in future studies.

Additionally, speakers discussed established methodologies for risk assessment while examining the complexities, uncertainties, and challenges involved in evaluating risks. This webinar aimed to lay a foundation for the development of a comprehensive and standardized framework for assessing microplastic-related risks, which can inform research priorities and downstream decision-making.
The webinar featured presentations from Todd Gouin (TG Environmental Research), Philip Landrigan (Boston College), and Stephanie Wright (Imperial College London), followed by a multisectoral panel discussion between the speakers and Valerie Hanley (California Department of Toxic Substances Control).

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine's Environmental Health Matters Initiative organized a webinar series to explore human exposure to and related health effects of microplastics in the environment.

The second webinar of the Microplastics & Health webinar series aimed to promote awareness and provide a standard baseline understanding of microplastics' distribution in the environment and the most prevalent sources or hotspots of human exposure. Specifically, speakers and panelists highlighted the major exposure pathways (e.g., inhalation, ingestion, dermal contact) and identified which pathways pose the highest risk to human health. The goal was to bridge scientific findings with policy and regulatory frameworks by identifying data gaps, research priorities, and regulatory strategies that can mitigate microplastic exposure and inform downstream decision-making.

The webinar featured presentations from Bart Koelmans (Wageningen University) and Tracey Woodruff (University of California, San Francisco) followed by a multisectoral panel discussion between the speakers and Matthew MacLeod (Stockholm University) and Jane Muncke (Food Packaging Forum).

This National Academies’ report evaluates progress in AI and the implications for economic productivity and job stability, identifying opportunities to equip workers and policymakers to flexibly respond to AI developments.

Thank you for joining us for an interactive discussion on human exposure to and related health effects of microplastics in the environment

This event was organized by the Environmental Health Matters Initiative in collaboration with the Roundtable on Plastics.

Microplastics are small pieces of plastic less than five millimeters long and have a variety of sources, including from the breakdown of larger plastic products, personal care products, and industrial processes. They are persistent in the environment and contribute to soil, land, and water pollution. Recent studies have detected microplastics in many human tissues and have been linked to systemic health effects such as inflammation and other health issues, but how dangerous they are still lacks evidence-based answers. This webinar is intended to provide a baseline of information on microplastics, the concerns, how complex this issue is, and our starting point for assessing human health risks.

A moderated discussion between Margaret Spring (Monterey Bay Aquarium) and Robert Ellis-Hutchings (The Dow Chemical Company) covered what we know about microplastics and their health implications. This conversation was followed by a multisectoral panel discussion with Susanne Brander (Oregon State University) Imari Walker-Franklin (RTI International), Anil Patri (FDA), and Scott Coffin (CA OEHHA). This conversation brought to bear what has been tried worldwide, successfully or not, the lessons to draw upon, and the path forward to bridging research gaps in science and data to inform hazard, exposure, and health risks from microplastics.

The Environmental Health Matters Initiative is a forum that aims to equitably improve the health of all people through evidence-based solutions to environmental health issues. The Roundtable on Plastics explores and advances systemic solutions and interventions across each stage of the life cycle to catalyze the development of innovative solutions to the plastic pollution and waste problem.

The growth of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies/systems has significant implications for state and local decision-makers, who need to consider their roles as regulators and users of this technology. For state and local decision-makers, embracing this innovation comes with the responsibility to balance ethical considerations, public trust, and the equitable distribution of benefits. Many state legislatures and local authorities have started introducing various AI bills and policies, ranging from exploring ways that AI can enhance constituent services to some temporarily banning its use. SEAN held a webinar on April 9, 2024, which was highly attended and generated many questions for the speakers, showing the need for additional information and engagement for decision makers in this rapidly changing AI environment.
