Priorities for Future Research

This research provides basic guidance for transportation agencies looking to build and sustain risk management. Building and sustaining risk management will require an investment of time that is not only consistent but focused. It will also require funds, agency culture, procedural shifting, and organizational alignment. It is important to consider the implementation of risk management as incremental, continuous, evolutionary, and unique in each agency. Although this process can be challenging, it will lead to more informed decision-making. Advancing risk management may be “easier said than done,” but the content contained within the digital guidance is an excellent framework for facilitating, advocating, and supporting incremental, tangible progress to build and sustain risk management within a state DOT. In the future, additional research could be focused on adding content in data and tools, communication and promotion, and value proposition. The maturity matrix could be enhanced in future research.

Additionally, on completion of this research, AASHTO will be responsible for updating and managing the digital content development. Keeping relevant and meaningful information on this digital site will be crucial to the successful use of this work.
