The capabilities of uncrewed aerial systems (UAS), or “drones,” have advanced rapidly, making them increasingly practical for transportation agencies. TRB hosted a webinar on Wednesday, April 30, 2025 from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM Eastern that shared leading applications of UAS to help provide safe and efficient infrastructure assessment capabilities. One of these applications is enhancing the safety and efficiency of infrastructure inspections. Presenters shared three case studies: one on bridge inspection, another on airport pavement inspection, and a third on construction modeling.

Fires and floods are causing infrastructure damage worldwide, leaving low-volume roads particularly vulnerable. Road that can be built or rebuilt efficiently, to quality standards, and with a durable driving surface will be most resilient to storm damage and reduce life-cycle costs. TRB hosted a webinar on Monday, November 4, 2024 from 3:00 PM to 4:30 PM Eastern that presented tools to help understand expected performances from wearing course materials on unpaved roads, how to blend different gravel sources to optimize unpaved road performance, and to select soil stabilization and dust control treatments that will produce a durable and climate resilient low-volume road driving surface.

This webinar was a follow on to TRB Webinar: Optimizing Unpaved Road Design with a Materials Blending Tool held on July 21, 2022.

Where in a system labor, equipment, and materials usage costs are captured can make a difference in the level of detail, accuracy, and timeliness of the cost information collected. As agencies are moving closer to Vision Zero, a multi-national road traffic safety project aiming to achieve a roadway system with no fatalities or series injuries, wrong-way driving crashes still cause hundreds of deaths and thousands of injuries every year.
