On July 24, 2023, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine convened a one-day public workshop to examine challenges and opportunities for a just transition and sustainable development. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussion of the workshop.

Description

A planning committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will organize a one-day public workshop to examine challenges and opportunities for a just transition and sustainable development. A just transition can be defined as “greening the economy in a way that is as fair and inclusive as possible to everyone concerned, creating decent work opportunities and leaving no one behind” (ILO, 2023). The workshop will focus on the following tasks:

  • Reviewing just transition and sustainability initiatives across the globe, including key measurement frameworks and the nexus between a just transition and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs);
  • Discussing the role of the private sector in supporting a just transition and sustainability, including how small and medium-sized enterprises could benefit from a just transition; and
  • Highlighting positive case studies to understand the complexities of just energy transition programs and opportunities for education and inclusive skills development for clean energy transitions.

The workshop will provide scientific input to the discussions of a Private Sector Summit on the margins of the United Nation’s 2023 SDGs Summit in September. A Proceedings of a Workshop--in Brief will be prepared by a designated rapporteur and distributed broadly.
