The NCHRP Transportation Emergency Management and Security Summit & Exchange will be held November 15-16 in Washington, D.C. at the historic National Academy of Sciences Building. This event serves as a continuation of the 2018 Resilient Innovations Summit and Exchange (RISE), which was held in Denver, Colorado. This event will focus on advancing the dialogue of emergency management and security in transportation sectors, which will facilitate knowledge sharing among state departments of transportation professionals, federal agency partners, academics, and private sector experts, highlighting advancements, best practices, and lessons learned in the field.

PLEASE NOTE: Advance registration IS required; Onsite registration will not be available for this event. Registration closes 5:00PM ET, Wednesday, November 14, 2023.

The new American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Guide for Accommodating Utilities within Highway Right-of-Way will combine the utility accommodation policy and the utility accommodation guide. TRB hosted a webinar on Monday, November 6, 2023 from 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM Eastern that provided background on the laws and regulations that led to the development of the original documents and a summary of the recent NCHRP project that led to the development of the new guide. Presenters concluded with an outlook on the AASHTO publication process and the expected publication timeline.

TRB National Cooperative Highway Research Program’s NCHRP Synthesis 568: Portland Cement Concrete Pavement Joint Sealant Practices and Performance helps to establish a standardized approach to joint sealant evaluation by sharing the current state-of-practice from state departments of transportation. Adjacent precast concrete box beams for short- and medium-span bridges are an economical solution. A recurring problem, however, is cracking in the grouted joints between adjacent beams. TRB hosted a webinar on Wednesday, September 20, 2023 from 3:00 PM to 4:30 PM Eastern that shared recent research on ways to prevent leakage in joints of adjacent box girder bridges. Presenters shared details of analytical and experimental evaluations of joints to provide load transfer while preventing leakage. Recent guidelines from AASHTO have shifted seismic bridge design from uniform hazard spectrum to a risk-targeted ground motion approach. This shift will result in more uniform reliability of bridges designed to resist seismic ground motions across the U.S. TRB hosted a webinar on Wednesday, May 17, 2023 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM Eastern that shared the development and basis for the recently adopted risk-targeted approach. Presenters shared the differences between uniform hazard and risk-targeted ground motions and how to apply the new risk-targeted ground motions within the AASHTO specifications.

For the first time, AASHTO Load-and-Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) Bridge Design Specifications will permit the use of 0.7-inch strands. The use of 0.7-inch strands could cut down on the number of strands in a girder, reduce the number of girders in a bridge, achieve longer spans, and allow the use of shallower girders for the same span length. TRB hosted a webinar on Monday, March 20, 2023 from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM Eastern that presented the results of a multi-year, multi-organizational research program leading to AASHTO’s revision. Presenters discussed the benefits and considerations of moving to 0.7-inch strands, compared to 0.6-inch strands. Presenters also shared the challenges to application and special attention to end region detailing.

The most common approach to reducing highway noise traffic is noise barriers, however there are many alternatives state department of transportations (DOTs) can consider that may be more context- and cost-appropriate.
