This is a hybrid meeting that will be held in Richland, WA and virtually. It will be used to discuss the National Academy of Sciences committee's final review of the FFRDC report on supplemental low-activity waste treatment alternatives.

The FFRDC report is an important document for decision makers that delivers a regulatory overview and describes methods used to analyze treatment alternatives (vitrification, fluidized bed steam reforming, and grouting) and results from the comparative analysis. The NAS committee conducted a review of the report, the third in an iterative series, and also sought input from a variety of stakeholders, including the public.

This final meeting will provide an opportunity for members of the community, representatives from the states of Washington and Oregon, regional tribal nations, and other local stakeholders to share their perspectives and insights on the report.

The NRSB Board welcomes members of the public to join them as Dr. Paul Black, co-founder of Neptune and Company, Inc. will discuss structured decision-making for nuclear waste management; Dr. Andrea DiCarlo, director of the Radiation and Nuclear Countermeasures Program (RNCP) at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases’s (NIAID), will describe the RNCP; Ms. Betsy Forinash, Acting Deputy, U.S. Department of Energy-Carlsbad Field Office (CBFO) will update the Board on the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP); and Dr. Wayne Newhauser, Charles M. Smith Chair in Medical Physics in the Department of Physics and Astronomy and Director of the Medical Physics Program at Louisiana State University, will present a recent study on about the future of the radiation workforce.

This public meeting will be held exclusively online. The meeting is open and free to the public.
