Cross-Sector Impact of the Smart Grid

Completed

The economic and technological environments surrounding the power supply business have resulted in the emergence of new players in the power market and a demand for new technologies. New power technologies need to accommodate countless sources of power generation and allow for interoperability between these sources. This meeting explored the applicability of the Internet of Things to the energy sector; the process used to catalyze the development of cyber security and privacy standards; the role that state governments play; and the efforts to train and advance the engineering and IT workforce to support shifts in technology.

Description

An ad hoc committee will organize a public workshop on smart grid technology, mostly as it relates to power/electricity but also possibly water, transportation, communication, and manufacturing-- weaving in aspects of the "Internet of Things" (IoT)-- and also cybersecurity. The workshop will explore: (1) the security concerns of smart grid technology, (2) the infrastructure needs and cost concerns associated with adopting this technology, (3) the research that smart grid technology relies on, (4) the impact of projected power conservation, (5) the applicability of the IoT to the energy sector, (6) the process used to catalyze the development of cyber security and privacy standards, (7) the role that state governments play, and (8) the efforts to train and advance the engineering and IT workforce to support shifts in technology. With these areas in mind, the workshop will seek to identify the successes and challenges that the energy sector has encountered and consider the application to other areas. Participants will consider the role of public-private partnerships in catalyzing the development of security standards, privacy protocols, and workforce training opportunities. A brief, individually authored workshop summary by a designated rapporteur will be issued in accordance with institutional guidelines.
