Topics
Earth observations are essential to understanding Earth systems and addressing global challenges. With associated data, repositories, and products, they drive innovation, support U.S. economic and national security, and inform a range of actions from wildfire response to agricultural forecasting. Yet, collecting, analyzing, and managing these data have become increasingly complex from rapid technological innovation, growing data volume, and need for structured use in advanced applications, while standards and governance frameworks struggle to keep pace. This activity will convene Earth data users and practitioners to explore the evolving landscape, promote data stewardship, and identify actions to improve long-term coordination and management.
Description
The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will convene a workshop that will provide a venue for the exchange of ideas among the academic community, professional societies, foundations, the private sector, federal, state, local, and tribal governments, and other interested parties. An ad hoc planning committee will organize a workshop on opportunities and challenges related to ongoing coordination, collaboration, and governance of Earth observations data. The workshop may consider:
- Roles of the public sector, for-profit private sector, not-for-profit private sector, philanthropy, and the academic community in the collection and use of Earth information and services;
- Legal, institutional, and practical considerations for different sectors that can create barriers to, or enable, effective coordination and partnerships;
- Approaches to sharing data that can enable effective interactions among different entities;
- Approaches for coordinating long-term data creation, curation, and operation of Earth observations, and associated tools; and
- How decisions involving the collection and stewardship of Earth observations could be made in more transparent and strategic ways.
