Reenvisioning the Future of STEM Research at Emerging Research Institutions: A Summit

In progress

Emerging research institutions (ERIs) have a significant impact on STEM workforce development and the nation's research and development capacity. While often utilizing innovative strategies that leverage limited funding, ERIs disproportionately provide communities across the United States with opportunities to engage in groundbreaking science and technology discoveries, enabling U.S. innovation and competitiveness. This multisectoral summit (supported by the NSF Award No. 2434412) will highlight innovative approaches that engage industry, state, and federal support to increase research capacity, opportunities for engagement and partnerships, and common threads in policy, program design, and practices that promote sustainable research infrastructure growth across the U.S.

Description

A committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will convene a summit on Reenvisioning the Future of STEM Research at Emerging Research Institutions (ERIs) to elucidate the unique roles these institutions serve within the STEM research enterprise and national efforts to increase research and development capacity. The summit will explore ways to facilitate engagement with communities and sectors across the United States in academic R&D and will discuss strategies to improve the coordination of STEM research at ERIs. Sessions will include discussions on how to incorporate the needs of multi-sectoral partners, address administrative research priorities, and provide a more effective framework for increasing engagement in the full breadth of R&D at ERIs and other STEM research organizations with limited federal funding.
Sessions will:

  • Examine how ERIs contribute to the nation’s broad goals for U.S. competitiveness and innovation;
  • Discuss strategies for aligning institutional efforts with the priorities of academic, federal, industry, and community stakeholders;
  • Explore new models for building resilient and responsive research ecosystems; and
  • Identify frameworks that expand R&D opportunities for the full spectrum of organizations seeking to contribute to U.S. competitiveness.

A Proceedings of the Summit will be published to summarize the discussions that take place.
